Did you know that over 40 million Americans struggle with an anxiety disorder?
While there are many ways to treat anxiety and depression, we are going to talk about the best scriptures that can help you cope. Living with depression is not an easy task; the good news is there’s a way to heal and defeat it.
If you’re struggling with feelings of sadness, depression, nervousness, and anxiety, you’ve come to the right place. We are going to talk about five scriptures that can help with overcoming depression and anxiety.
1. Lamentations 3:22-33
If you feel like life is beating you up, this verse is for you. There are times when it seems like nothing good is happening and we will never be happy again.
This verse talks about God’s love for us, and because he loves us, we are not “consumed”. Even when it’s challenging, you must have faith that God is going to see you through. These verses use the words “hope, compassion and abundant lovingkindness” to give encouragement that God is good, even when life is hard.
For context, Jeremiah speaks this verse in the midst of his grief. Israel has just been destroyed, and he still has faith that God will be there for him and the country.
2. Luke 12:25-26
One of the types of anxiety that many people struggle with is worry. Oftentimes we believe that by thinking and worrying about something we can change it.
If you have a big test coming up, spending time being anxious isn’t going to help you. The same goes if you’re starting a business, or sending your children off to college. Remember this verse and know that God is in control and worrying is only affecting your mental health.
3. Isaiah 41:10

This is one of the best scriptures for overcoming depression and anxiety. Life can be scary and sad sometimes. In this verse, Isaiah tells us that God is with us, and He will help us through our trials.
He promises to give us the strength to keep going. If you are feeling anxious about something, remember this verse. Consider writing it down on a notecard and putting it in your purse or wallet; that way you can read it whenever you’re feeling nervous.
4. 1 Peter 5:6-7
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” This verse is a gentle reminder that no matter what’s going on in your life, it’s not too big or too small for God to handle. He wants to take away your anxiety and help you through whatever situation you’re working through. Remember that you are made in His image and are of great value to God. He loves you and cares for you in all the details of your life. Trust Him.
5. Romans 8:37-39
We can talk about “What ifs” all day long. We can get so distracted about what could happen that we forget to enjoy the current moment. Sometimes even the current moments are so hard that your next breath is all you can muster, but God is in those moments and gives us strength to survive…even the next 5 seconds.
It can be hard to push those thoughts out of our minds, but reading this scripture can help. It tells us that no matter what happens, we can’t be separated from God and His love through Jesus Christ.
Overcoming Depression and Anxiety
Coping with depression can take a long time. It’s not something that just goes away. Anxiety will hold you, prisoner, with fear that will paralyze your life. As Christians, it is critical that we allow the Word of God to be salved to our weary souls. The Word is our weapon to defeat the enemy’s attack on our hearts. He can’t steal your salvation, but if he can paralyze you and stop you in your tracks, he will steal your mission to love others and share yourself with the world as a light for Jesus.
